Plan on roughly five hours of driving from the Dallas–Fort Worth area to the Port of Galveston about 280 to 300 miles depending on where in the Metroplex you start. The route runs I-45 South most of the way, straight through Houston, then across the causeway onto Galveston Island.
Two stretches can add time and we build for both: Houston traffic through the middle of the day, and the backup at the port itself on a busy embarkation morning when three ships are loading at once.
What time should we leave?
Most cruise lines want you checked in a couple of hours before departure, and boarding usually closes well before the ship sails check the exact times printed on your cruise documents, because they vary by line and by ship.
Working backward from that, we’ll usually recommend an early-morning departure from DFW on sailing day, or driving down the day before and staying on the island overnight. When you call, tell us your ship’s departure time and we’ll work out the pickup time with you. From our Houston-area base the drive is much shorter, so the timing is easier.
Ships do move between terminals by season and by sailing, so the terminal printed on your boarding pass is the one that counts. Give us that number when you book and your chauffeur will take you straight to the right drop-off lane.

How far is it from Dallas to the Galveston cruise port? About 280 to 300 miles, roughly five hours of driving, depending on your pickup address and traffic through Houston.
Royal Caribbean uses Terminal 10, MSC and Norwegian use Terminal 16, Carnival mainly uses Terminal 25, and Disney and Princess use Terminal 28. Ships shift between terminals, so go by the terminal number on your boarding pass and give us that number when you book.
Cruise lines serving the Texas Gulf Coast sail from Galveston, not from Houston’s Bayport terminal. If your cruise is described as leaving from Houston, Galveston is your actual departure point, and we run that route constantly.
